TITLE OF POSITION:

“Corrections Nurse”

QUALIFICATIONS:

Completion of secondary education or equivalent; completion of Licensed Practical Nurse program, completion of approved training courses in jail security practices and procedures; ability to successfully pass required checks and tests such as criminal record and background checks, and intelligence, physical, mental, and work-related tests; or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.

LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Certification as a Licensed Practical Nurse; Basic Life Support certification; valid Ohio driver’s license; ability to obtain other law enforcement certification(s) related to duties.

EQUIPMENT OPERATED:

Motor vehicle, computer, printer, telephone, copy machine, intercom system, two-way radio, laminator, restraint devices, jail safety and security equipment, flashlight, blood pressure monitor, thermometers and other vital signs monitoring equipment.

INHERENTLY HAZARDOUS OR PHYSICALLY DEMANDING WORKING CONDITIONS:

General Duty: Safe and healthful workplace.

May come in contact with hostile or dangerous inmates.

May be exposed to blood borne pathogens.

DUTIES:

This position description in no manner states or implies that these are the only duties and responsibilities to be performed by the position incumbent.

EESENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION:

1.) Interviews inmates to determine medical condition, measures vital signs (e.g., pulse rate, temperature, blood pressure, etc.). draws blood for lab analysis; accompanies physician on rounds, assists in performing examinations and treatment of inmates; distributes prescribed and over-the-counter medication to inmates; provides first response medical assistance during medical emergencies, performs routine emergency care of a non-specialized nature to inmates and staff; inventories, orders, and maintains medical supplies and materials; schedules inmate appointments and notifies jail supervisors of same; prepares special diet menus for inmates as needed, informs kitchen personnel of inmates’ special nutritional needs.

2.) Monitors and observes daily activities and behavior of inmates (e.g., meals, sleeping, bathing, recreation, telephone calls, work visiting activities, etc.) to ensure safety, health, and general well-being; medication, personal, and other items to inmates according to established procedures; supervises inmates in custodial activities (e.g., cleaning living areas, changing linen, etc.); handles inmate complaints and request; reports infractions; reports difficulties or complex situations to officer-in-charge; supervises trustees.

3.) Assists inmates in movement process (e.g., transports inmates to/from doctor and other facilities; cell assignments of inmates; etc.); escorts inmates to/from facility programs (e.g., educational instruction, work detail, breaks, law library, personal/legal visits, etc.).

4.) Interacts with persons entering department and receives and screens incoming telephone calls; checks in visitors, clergy, attorneys, probation and court officials, etc.; processes releases and summons; forwards paperwork and calls to appropriate parties; responds to routine inquiries; etc.); verifies and updates information on computer; operates office equipment as necessary.

5.) Attends staff meetings and training sessions as required.

6.) Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance.

7.) Meets all job safety requirements and all applicable OSHA safety standards that pertain to essential functions.

8.) Performs other related duties as assigned.

9.) Remains informed of current developments and procedures pertinent to duties.

10.) Works overtime as necessary.

11.) Maintains required licenses and certifications.

Specific Disqualifiers/Behaviors: Felony, Criminal Activity Disqualifiers The following occurrences and/or incidents in a candidate’s background may result in disqualification from the selection process (but are not limited to): Felony Conviction Driving Disqualifiers Poor driving history. Drug Use Disqualifiers Illegal use of controlled substances and/or conviction for controlled substance violation. Employment Disqualifiers Poor work history to include abuse of sick leave, disciplinary actions showing disregard for policies and procedures, etc.

Financial Disqualifiers Poor credit history including debts not being regularly paid. Additional Disqualifiers Other concerns deemed undesirable in a Corrections Officer position given the responsibilities incumbent to this position.
